10 Training Tips for Your New Dog

Pet owners often treat their dogs like an individual or as a toy. Dogs are living creature — and a distinct species. Human Beings are primates, and dog breeds are called canids. Even though dogs are our best friends, some dog owners should recognize that they belong to a different speciesIt is therefore crucial for them to know the dog’s species. Families must be knowledgeable about the breed of their dog and use that information in a positive manner.

What would you advise someone who is to bring a puppy to their home?

PD: Understand that your dog is distinct species and be prepared to put in a lot of time and effortKnow your dog better –instill a positive behaviour, take him/her on walks, play safe games with him/her and be an active participant in the activities your dog enjoys.

Prepare for financial obligations such as vet bills, costs when your dog falls ill, grooming charges, boarding charges during your absence or movingAlso, you should put a support system for an emergency.

In the end, I believe you should be prepared to commit for a commitment that lasts 12-14 years to bring up a dogWe are able to pursue our passions and hobbies, but a dog’s reliance is upon the human family to give them a good life. Don’t let your dog down on that.

What advice do you have to children who already own a pet?

PD: Take part in the life of your dogTry to be part of the things that your dog is truly passionate about. If you have a Labrador, take him/her for a swim. If you own an Beagle or Indie, take him/her for sniffing games in a park. Spend quality moment with your furry friend to develop a strong relationshipYour time spent together is all that is important.

What are the academic and professional routes to take if someone is interested in becoming a dog behaviorist and trainer?

PD: There are classes that you can take to acquire the skills and training required to be a professional dog behaviorist. I have pursued courses conducted by Shirin Merchant who is one of the pioneers in the field of dog behavior and behavior training within India. I have also taken classes of John Rogerson, who is an internationally renowned trainer of dogs and behaviorist. They both Shirin and John employ gentle and positive methods of training that are focused on building a strong relationship between the dog’s family.

What are the possible career paths one can choose to pursue while playing with pets?
